North East Community Hub - Project Update
Happy New Year!
Please find below the latest project update regarding the $17.2 million North East Community Hub major project.
What’s been happening?
Council gratefully acknowledges the financial support of the Australian Government, through the National Stronger Regions Fund, of $3.2m towards the construction of the North East Community Hub. The funding was announced in October 2016.
The tender for construction was awarded to Ireland Brown Constructions Pty Ltd in September 2016. The contractor will be on site from 16 January 2017, with one of the first jobs being the demolition of the existing buildings. During the construction period, construction vehicles will primarily enter Centre Way via Doncaster Road, minimising access via Trentwood Ave. Project-related drainage and sewer relocation works began on Monday 9 January.
While works take place, the Greythorn Early Childhood Centre and Kindergarten (GECC) will be located at the former Balwyn Leisure Centre, 230 Balwyn Rd, Balwyn North, two kilometres from the current GECC. The former leisure centre is served by buses along Belmore and Balwyn Roads. It has ample parking to cater for the needs of the childcare centre.
The relocation will take place during the summer break to minimise the disruption for children and parents. The GECC closed on Friday 23 December and will re-open during the week starting Monday 9 January 2017.
Families who currently use the Greythorn Maternal and Child Health Service (MCH) can choose to visit the Greythorn nurse at Balwyn, Balwyn North or Minifie Park Maternal and Child Health centres. The hours at each of these centres will be increased to cater for all families. For MCH appointments phone: 03 9278 4606.
Community Ambassador meeting
The project’s community ambassadors met in December at Creative Write-it in North Balwyn to hear an update on the project from Council, ask questions and discuss how to share information with local residents. If you are interested in being involved, contact Fiona Read (contact details below).
Centre Way landscaping
As part of the North East Community Hub project, the eastern end of Centre Way will become one-way. This will ensure it is a pedestrian and vehicle friendly link between the Hub and the Greythorn Shopping Centre. Landscaping will make the streetscape more attractive for local residents and people who use the Hub and shops.
To help make the area more appealing, traders' bins in Centre Way have been relocated to a newly constructed centralised waste collection facility in the car park adjacent to these shops.
The North East Community Hub project also involves the creation of a new public park on the corner of Centre Way and Trentwood Avenue. It is envisaged that this will be an attractive open community space and will host the North Balwyn RSL remembrance ceremonies.
